Until the end of 1971 Nideggen was the administrative center for eight independent entities in the Rur Valley and the Zülpicher Börde agricultural area. Since the boundary reforms enacted in January 1972, the Nideggen municipality has encompassed the following subdistricts: Abenden, Berg-Thuir, Brück, Embken, Muldenau, Nideggen, Rath, Schmidt, and Wollersheim. Niedeggen relies heavily on tourism; apart from a few craft enterprises, there is very little industry in the area.
